Salomon Fast Wing Hoodie

Clothing Review: Salomon Fast Wing Hoodie

The gear team had a chance to tackle some runs with the new Salomon Fast Wing Hoodie and this jacket is honestly just insane. It is listed as super light, but when you first pull it into your hands its almost a little alarming at how little it weighs. You really begin to question how high the quality is and how much its going to do for you, and then you run with it and you are blown away.

The weight is listed as 90 grams, basically .2 pounds which really feels like next to nothing. Its also packable and folds into its own chest pocket and then zips close. When packed away its about fist size and I found it could almost fit in my normal pocket, but it definitely will stash away into any bag/pack you have with you easily. It has double ripstop protection and after hitting some bushes I can attest, not even a mark on it. The ripstop is also windproof which seems crazy given the Fast Wing’s weight, but it does handle it well and because its so light its also pretty breathable. There is some under arm venting as well. Their is some level of reflectivity, but its so minimal that for true road use in very dark conditions I might look elsewhere. Thats okay because this thing is meant for the trail.

The jacket is designed to be very close fitting and you won’t get too many layers underneath so definitely an athletic fit. The cuffs and waistband have just a very little elastic in them so you won’t get a lot of stretch in those areas which keeps with the minimal design. The hood is also close fitting, but it has a nice extra layer of elastic on the forehead line that keeps the hood in place even at full stride and when its windy. Definitely a massive plus. I would recommend trying it on because I did find the medium we tested ran shorter than other jackets despite the fact the sleeves and chest fit properly for that size. It could just be my frame, so definitely try it on or make sure you can return it if its too short.

I would definitely put this in a class of gear meant for trail runners and racers, this is high end technical running gear. Its meant for faster runners and its not going to keep you especially warm, but instead is meant to provide a second skin to keep wind at bay and provide some protection. So if you are looking for a solid performance layer that handles windy conditions well and gives you a little extra protection, then the Salomon Fast Wing Hoodie is definitely one to look at.

The Salomon Fast Wing Hoodie is available $100. You can get it directly from Salomon or at any number of outdoor stores.
