Triathlon Diary Entry: Triathlon Accomplished – Part 3 – The Run and The Finish

The transition into the run went really smoothly, much better than I expected in fact. After I dismounted the bike, I sprinted across the still damp grass into my transition spot and made a quick change into my Hokas, threw on my number belt, and grabbed my hat and before you know it I was headed out of the gate with a total transition time of 1:41. Most of this was due to the run from dismount to my location and then back out the gate into the run.

Triathlon Diary Entry: Triathlon Accomplished – Part 2 – The Ride

I was mentally preparing myself for the bike coming out of the water and even those last 250 meters of the swim I started visualizing the next steps and the ride itself. Cycling is one of the things I love and I’m fairly confident with, but I wanted to be mentally prepared before getting there so started getting my head into that space earlier. Unlike other triathlons, Portland Triathlon has quite a large distance between where you exit the water and the actual transition area. Triathlon Diary Entry: Detailing The Swim Gear Or What’s In The Bag?

As several folks have asked over the last few weeks, I wanted to put together a quick article on the kind of gear I take with me when I am doing my swim training. If for no other reason than it kind of shocked me as well. Of course it can be as simple as throwing some trunks on, but I am really trying to train the way a triathlete does so I have a little more gear than normal and when you juggle both pool and open water, it adds up.

Diary Entry: Going Through The Shaving and Waxing Process For Your First Triathlon

Believe it or not, one of the most common questions I was asked when I told people I was training for a triathlon was are you going to shave? I found this incredibly amusing given all the other potential difficulties you run into when training for a tri, but I knew it was looming out there. I decided, then and there, that not only would I go the shaving route, but I’d also go for the full wax and give a little comparison. The details on that will follow.

Training while Traveling

Diary Entry: Triathlon Training Continues While on Vacation

The word “vacation” usually conjures up images of far-off lands, mountains or beaches, maybe a little alcohol and good food, but in my case there is this realization that goes along with it that there is this event looming. So just as I have hit my stride with the training, I then remember our family trip to Ireland and Scotland is coming up and I don’t want to lose that time and end up a few weeks later with a bit of a reset. The thing is, I’ve never really trained all that hard before while traveling. Sure, I’ve done little runs here or there, but nothing to keep me truly in race condition. I typically always come home a couple pounds heavier and need a little time to work the legs out, but that is not an option here. And did I mention Ireland and Scotland… you know, land of whiskey, beer, soda bread, meat and potatoes. Let’s just say I was a little nervous going in as to how this would work out.Continue reading
