I have tried a lot of trail running shoes over the years, and it is rare that one strikes me as both plush enough for long days yet confident enough for technical terrain. The Hoka Mafate 5 does just that. When I went out for my first run in them, I wasn’t completely sure what to expect with its higher stack height, dual-density foam, and big lugs, but as the miles added up I found the ride settled into something that felt smooth, secure and remarkably comfortable. And yes, it is a little heavy, but when you get cruising it disappears so for casual trail joggers to ultra-distance grinders, the Mafate 5 is something to check out

Upper
The upper of the Mafate 5 really has moved into a more premium space compared with earlier versions. The warp-knit material gives a more refined feel that is soft, conforming, but with protective overlays in key areas (especially around midfoot and sides) to guard against rock strikes and abrasion. In terms of width and fit, I found it accommodating. The toebox had enough room for natural foot expansion during longer runs where your foot swells, the midfoot felt secure, and the heel locked in well.

One slight annoyance is that the tongue is short and relatively thin in, so minimal padding. This caught my eye after several runs, especially when tightening laces for steep climbs. The thin tongue may not bother everyone, but I could sense the lace pressure a little more than I’d like.
Midsole
Here’s where the Mafate 5 really begins to show its charm. The dual-density foam set-up means you’re getting a soft, plush landing (especially in that heel) from the supercritical EVA layer, while the firmer compression-molded EVA in the forefoot provides structure and a more energetic toe-off feel. The addition of the Rocker Integrity Technology (which is just a TPU insert) helps preserve the MetaRocker curve of the shoe, so the shoe rolls you forward more smoothly rather than feeling like you’re controlling a tall stack.
Because of the higher stack, there is a float sensation as your foot is sitting up a bit higher than in lower-profile shoes, but thanks to the wide base and rocker geometry, that sensation is mitigated. On long wear, the cushioning is excellent for reducing fatigue and absorbing impact.

One caveat is that the highly cushioned ride means you sacrifice a bit of ground-feel and nimbleness compared to more minimalist trail shoes. If you’re running highly technical terrain with lots of foot placement and roots/rocks, you may feel slightly disconnected, but thats all about personal feel.
Outsole
The Mafate 5 includes a Vibram Megagrip rubber outsole with approximately 4-5 mm traction lugs. The lug pattern is cleverly designed where lugs are larger at midfoot and taper toward the edges, aiding mud-shedding and grip regardless of terrain. In practice, the grip felt outstanding on mixed terrain like wet rock, loose gravel, muddy patches, etc so the shoe inspired some confidence.

Durability of the outsole is strong, but this is defiitely an area to watch. The deeper lugs which create an almost tire tread like platform may gather thick mud in very boggy conditions, which could affect weight and shedding on some trails.
Run Performance
When I first stepped into the Mafate 5 and took it out, I felt immediately the plush underfoot and wide stable platform. Out of the box the fit was solid, and the ride felt confident. The rocker geometry helped me settle into a smooth rhythm quickly, even on trails where I might normally feel the fatigue setting in. On long, moderate terrain featuring single track, mixed dirt/rock, moderate climbs/descent, etc the shoe really shines. The impact absorption is high, after several hours the legs felt fresher and less battered than in some lower-cushion shoes I’ve run. For heel-strikers, and especially on downhills, the 8 mm drop and deep cushioning felt very natural.
When the terrain got steeper or more technical (rocky descents, tight switchbacks, highly uneven footing), I noticed a couple of things. The shoe is a little heavier than some lighter trail models, so acceleration and agility can feel slightly reduced. Also, because of the high stack and plush heel, I sensed a little more lateral “give” during sudden side-hills or sharply angled descents. Not unsafe by any means, but something to note if you’re running with high cadence footwork or very technical terrain.

On flatter trail runs or long miles, the Mafate 5 is genuinely fun. The midsole bounce, combined with the rolling feel of the rocker, creates a forward-movement feeling that makes time fly. Grip never stepped in question, even on slick or damp rock surfaces. I found confidence whether charging downhill or navigating wet roots.
Conclusion
The HOKA Mafate 5 stands out in the “max-cushion trail running” category and delivers on promises of comfort, grip and long-haul capability. If you’re a trail runner looking for a shoe that you can count on through long distances, mixed terrain and weather conditions, this is one to seriously consider. The plush midsole, high-performance outsole and solid upper construction make it a dependable choice for many types of runners.

That said, if you prioritise ultra-lightweight feel, maximum ground-contact sensitivity, or you run highly technical terrain every time, there may be more optimised options. But for most trail enthusiasts, especially those who run long, or race ultra or just want one good shoe to do it all, the Mafate 5 ticks a lot of boxes.
Final Grade: 9/10
Based on ride comfort, build quality, versatility and durability — a strong performer that earns high marks. Some weight and agility trade-offs keep it from the perfect score, but for its intended audience it delivers big.
