Upper
The upper follows the road Rocket X’s approach to weight management: as little material as structurally necessary. Engineered mesh is lightweight and breathable, with reinforcement added at the medial side where trail terrain creates lateral abrasion loads the road version never encounters. The toe box is snug, this is a race last, not a comfort last, and the fit rewards running your normal size or potentially half a size up if your toes push forward on technical descent. Midsole

The plate’s primary function on trail is stabilization: the varied surface loading from technical terrain creates torsional forces that can compromise a plate’s intended propulsive effect. The Rocket X Trail’s geometry manages that challenge without surrendering the forward propulsion benefit. At 8.4oz, it’s among the lighter plated trail shoes in the category, a race weight for a race purpose. The PEBA compound delivers high energy return across the pace range; there’s no dead zone at any effort level.
Outsole
Vibram Megagrip with 4mm lugs. On a road racing shoe adapted for trail use, the outsole is often the weakest link, a concession to terrain that carries forward too much road geometry. The Rocket X Trail avoids that problem by using one of the most respected trail outsole compounds available and sizing the lugs for race-pace trail rather than casual hiking. Grip holds on wet rock, muddy singletrack, and the mixed surfaces that characterize most technical trail race courses. The 4mm depth is a race depth, enough for grip, not so deep that you’re plowing soil on the runnable sections.
Performance
Running the Rocket X Trail at race effort on technical singletrack is the experience the shoe was engineered for. Plate engagement is clearest on firm, runnable trail surface where the geometry allows a clean propulsive toe-off; on loose or irregular terrain, the plate contribution diminishes but doesn’t disappear entirely. At tempo and faster, PEBA foam works in concert with the plate to create forward momentum that trail shoes without plates cannot replicate. Easy-pace trail running in the Rocket X Trail is possible but is plainly not the point, the shoe has a rev range and it starts high. Race days and fast workouts are its element; everything else belongs to a different shoe.
Overall Conclusion
Hoka transferred the Rocket X’s essential character, PEBA foam, carbon plate, race-weight construction, onto trail without diluting any of it. The Vibram Megagrip outsole earns its place on technical terrain, and the shoe runs like the race tool it is. The limitations are intentional: not durable enough for daily training miles, not protective enough for ultra distances, not forgiving enough for runners who don’t race hard. Within the boundaries it set for itself, it delivers exactly what it promised.
