Overview
The Vomero has occupied Nike’s max-cushion daily trainer slot long enough that expectations have calcified around the name: soft, protective, fine for long easy miles, forgettable. The Vomero Premium is Nike’s attempt to change that equation, swapping the standard ZoomX-only configuration for a dual-foam construction that places a ReactX base layer beneath a ZoomX top layer, ReactX providing durability and structure, ZoomX providing the energy return the foam’s name implies. The resulting ride character surprised us. The standard Vomero is still the standard Vomero. This one is asking a genuinely different question, and it answers it well.
Upper
Premium woven upper material, the source of the “Premium” designation, brings a textile quality that’s genuinely different from Nike’s standard engineered mesh construction. The weave is softer against the foot, breathes adequately for moderate temperatures, and has a structured feel that doesn’t rely on synthetic overlays to maintain shape. The heel counter integrates into the upper construction rather than sitting as a separate hard element, a design choice that allows subtle flex on initial lockdown without sacrificing hold during sustained effort. The upper is the most refined component of this build, and for a shoe at this price point, that’s the right place to invest.
Midsole
ReactX base plus ZoomX top layer is the architecture. ReactX is Nike’s standard compound, more durable than ZoomX, less lively, but sitting above generic EVA in feel and energy return. The ZoomX top layer provides the cushion-with-energy-return character that Nike’s PEBA-equivalent material is known for. In practice, the dual-layer construction creates a midsole that feels softer than full-ZoomX but more responsive than full-ReactX, a compromise that works better than most midsole hybrids because each layer is serving a distinct purpose. The 40mm heel / 32mm forefoot stack at 8mm drop provides genuine max-cushion geometry while the ZoomX layer keeps the foam from going flat under extended loading.
Outsole
Waffle-pattern rubber outsole provides consistent grip on dry pavement and adequate grip on light-wet surface. The waffle geometry distributes contact area broadly, which benefits traction on varied road surfaces without creating the mud-packing issues that waffle patterns sometimes cause on loose material. Durability is in the normal range for a ZoomX-adjacent midsole shoe, the rubber will outlast the upper and the foam under most use patterns. On the rain-slicked pavement Pacific Northwest runners navigate from October through April, the waffle rubber performs predictably without drama.
Performance
The Vomero Premium’s character differs from the standard Vomero in one concrete way: the ZoomX top layer creates a responsive feel at the foot-foam interface that the standard single-compound construction simply can’t replicate. At easy and moderate paces, the difference is perceptible, there’s more energy feedback per stride, which translates to less perceived effort on long runs where the standard compound goes flat. The Premium doesn’t transform into a tempo shoe; this is still a max-cushion daily trainer built for long, comfortable miles. But those miles now feel noticeably less like a transaction with your legs and more like they’re going somewhere.
Overall Conclusion
Nike took the shoe that Vomero loyalists were comfortable forgetting about and gave it a genuine reason to be interesting again. The dual-foam architecture is meaningfully different from what came before, the woven upper earns its Premium name, and the ride character lands closer to “engaging” than any previous Vomero has managed. For runners who train in the max-cushion category and have been looking for a reason to try what Nike is doing with ZoomX in a non-race context, the Vomero Premium is that reason.
Final Grade: 9/10
ReactX plus ZoomX dual-foam architecture makes the Vomero Premium the most engaging iteration of Nike’s max-cushion daily trainer: the upper quality and ride character both earn the Premium designation.
