The padded heel collar is softer and more supportive than previous versions, wrapping the ankle without the rigidity that can create pressure hotspots over 15-plus miles. The Hyperion Max 4 is a road shoe and performs accordingly on road; keep it there. The Hyperion Max 4 performs best across a range that stretches from easy long runs through moderate uptempo efforts at roughly 7:20 to 7:30 per mile. At easy paces the DNA Gold and rocker geometry make the miles feel effortless in the way that good max-cushion shoes should; at uptempo paces the SpeedVault plate and dual-layer midsole add snap and efficiency that the Ghost Max 4’s DNA Loft v3 construction simply cannot replicate. It is not a race shoe by weight or geometry, and runners chasing aggressive speed sessions will find the 10.1 oz men’s weight noticeable at those paces.
