The Salomon S/LAB Ultra Glide is a trail shoe that feels like it was designed to go the distance while still keeping things light and nimble. Salomon’s S/LAB line has always been about top-tier performance, and this one blends cushioning, protection, and versatility in a way that makes it stand out from the more aggressive, mountain-specific shoes they’re known for. What struck me most was how smooth and comfortable it felt even on longer runs, there’s a surprising amount of cushion here without losing that responsive, agile edge that makes Salomon shoes so reliable on technical trails. It’s the kind of shoe I’d reach for on big training days or ultras where comfort and consistency matter most.

Upper
The upper of the Ultra Glide is streamlined yet surprisingly comfortable. The engineered mesh feels light and breathable, and the EndoFit inner sleeve gives it a sock-like feel that really hugs the midfoot. I appreciated the Sensifit overlays, which added security without making the upper feel stiff. Salomon’s Quicklace system is here as well, and while it’s not everyone’s favorite, I found it made lockdown quick and easy. The heel felt nicely padded without being overbuilt, and the toe box had just enough space to let my toes spread out on long runs. For me, the upper struck that balance of performance snugness and long-distance comfort.

Midsole
The Energy Foam midsole is where the shoe really shines. At 38 mm in the heel and 32 mm in the forefoot, it offers a max-cushion feel, yet it doesn’t feel mushy or unstable. The ride is smooth and forgiving, with enough bounce to keep things lively when you’re hours into a run. I liked the 6 mm drop, it felt natural and kept me moving forward without pitching me too far onto my toes. The Profeel Film adds a nice layer of rock protection, so I could step on roots and rocks without feeling jabbed. For me, the midsole felt protective enough for ultras but responsive enough for shorter, faster trail runs.

Outsole
The outsole uses Salomon’s All Terrain Contagrip, and the 4 mm lugs are versatile enough to handle a mix of surfaces. On dry dirt and rocky terrain, grip felt excellent, and I had confidence even when descending. In muddy conditions, the lugs weren’t as aggressive as some mountain shoes, but they still handled reasonably well. I also liked that the outsole didn’t feel awkward on short road sections, which makes the shoe versatile for mixed-surface long runs. Durability looked solid after a number of outings, no early wear that made me concerned.

Performance on the Trail
On the trail, the Ultra Glide lived up to its name, it felt smooth and efficient over long miles. Easy runs felt comfortable, and when I picked up the pace, the shoe responded well without feeling sluggish. What impressed me most was how consistent it felt: whether I was on buffed-out singletrack, rocky climbs, or rolling fire roads, the shoe never seemed out of place. It’s not the lightest shoe in the world, so I wouldn’t call it a pure racer, but for long-distance training and ultras, it really shines. My legs felt fresher at the end of long runs than they usually do in firmer, more minimal shoes.

Conclusion
The Salomon S/LAB Ultra Glide is a versatile, cushioned trail shoe that delivers comfort, protection, and stability without losing that Salomon precision. The breathable upper, energetic Energy Foam midsole, and reliable Contagrip outsole make it a great choice for long runs, ultras, or any trail runner who wants a shoe that feels comfortable mile after mile. It’s not the most aggressive option for technical mountain terrain, but for a wide range of trails, and especially for going long, it’s one of the most enjoyable and dependable trail shoes I’ve worn. If you want a Salomon that balances plush comfort with trail-ready performance, the Ultra Glide is easy to recommend.
