TopoAthletic RunVenture Hero2

Shoe Review: Topo Athletic Runventure 2

The Runventure 2 is a welcome update to the Topo Athletic lineup as they look to solidify their model lineup and assign each shoe more appropriately to a category. In this case, the Runventure 2 clearly takes the reigns as their lightly cushioned and performance based trail shoe. With material and design updates, this model definitely has a lot going for it.

Construction: Upper

The upper on the Runventure 2 uses the same durable mesh you will find on the other new Topo Athletic models, but the most noticeable change is in the heel. The new design features and new relaxed elastic-based material that really grips your foot. It also reduces the overall weight of the shoe and definitely leans into the more performant nature of this model. To coincide with the new heel, they have also interested an all new gaiter which does help keep out dirt, but also gels seamlessly with the new heel.

Construction: Midsole

The midsole is full EVA, but thinner than the Terraventure and with very little cushion. The stack height is only 10mm with a 0mm drop, so we definitely wouldn’t classify this as a comfort shoe.

Construction: Outsole

The outsole on the Runventure 2 features the same high performance rubber that Topo Athletic put in the Terraventure. They grip well and handle a wide variety of trail terrain without a problem.

Style & Aesthetics

The Runventure 2 comes in 2 colors for men and women and they look good overall, definitely more performant in appearance with the streamlined heel.

Run Test

His perspective
The shoes feel amazing on the foot. It weighs less than a lot of road shoes I have tested and actually feels more performance oriented. They truly feel like a light and quick shoe. The heel is definitely different and I wasn’t sure at first. I loved the way it hugged my ankle, but also found it really easy to tweak my ankle over nasty terrain or on longer runs when the legs got a little tired. Personally, I would reserve these for my short/speed based trail runs on fire roads or single track, things less technical because while these are spry, I like a little more ankle support. Also, would love to see some cooler colors/designs in the men’s lineup. The women’s color choices are stronger and are yet still subdued.

Her perspective
I actually really love these on my feet and unlike the Ultraventure, enjoyed the amount of flexibility in the toebox. The lower drop took some getting used as does the elastic heel cup, but they do feel great on the foot. My only other comment is while they are super breathable, this can also make them a little chilly so sock up appropriately.

Overall Conclusion

The Topo Athletic Runventure 2 are a fun shoe and definitely designed for the more experienced, more performance oriented, and even more nimble trail runner. They can handle a lot of speed and grip well, but over longer distances you will be wanting for a bit more comfort both in the heel and under foot. Definitely love the direction they went here as it rounds out their trail lineup.
