It goes without saying that last year’s Ghost Max was a surprising standout in the field. No one really expected it to be as good as it was, so that left expectations high when it came to what the Ghost Max 2 might look like. The answer is interesting because it does retain a bit of the original, but it has been stiffened up a tad, consumerized definitely, especially in the upper, but to us it is still a better shoe than the standard Ghost and we prefer it for daily miles. Read on to see why and if it might just be a better fit for you as well.

Upper
The upper of the Brooks Ghost Max 2 continues the trend of comfort and support with a plush, high-quality construction. The use of soft yet durable mesh ensures breathability, keeping feet cool even during longer runs. The fit is snug but not too tight, providing ample room without leading to any hot spots or pressure points. This model’s lacing system and overlays enhance the fit, maintaining a secure lock-in feel that supports each stride. The design, available in multiple colorways, ensures runners can find something that appeals aesthetically as well.

Midsole
Brooks has upped their game with the introduction of the nitrogen-infused DNA Loft V3 midsole in the Ghost Max 2. This cushioning delivers a softer underfoot feel compared to its predecessor while ensuring a responsive ride. The combination of plush cushioning and gentle resilience absorbs shock effectively, aiding in smoother transitions from heel to toe. This midsole strikes a fine balance, making it ideal for both recovery days and longer, steady runs. It is slightly firmer than the original Max, but not in a bad way.

Outsole
The outsole of the Ghost Max 2 is designed with durability and traction in mind. Featuring a robust rubber compound, it offers excellent grip on various road surfaces. The tread pattern is strategically designed to provide stability, ensuring confident strides even on wet or uneven pavement. While the overall composition remains largely unchanged, the outsole continues to be a dependable aspect, promising longevity and consistent performance.

Performance During the Run
Lacing up the Ghost Max 2, it quickly becomes apparent why this shoe is a favored choice for maximally cushioned road miles. During short runs, the shoe maintains a comfortable and responsive ride, while longer distances further emphasize the plush support of the DNA Loft V3 midsole. The slightly firmer feel compared to the original Ghost Max enhances the run without compromising on cushioning, providing a smooth and stable experience across various speeds. Whether dealing with recovery runs or regular training sessions, the Ghost Max 2 adapts well, supporting varied running styles without significant fatigue.

Conclusion
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 successfully brings a softer yet resilient approach to the max-cushion category. With its well-constructed upper, advanced midsole technology, and dependable outsole, it serves as a versatile option for many runners. The slight increase in weight and somewhat basic aesthetics might not thrill everyone, yet the overall performance and comfort shouldn’t be overlooked. When considering a new addition to your running gear, weighing your own preferences and running needs will determine if the Ghost Max 2 is the fitting choice.
