Ah, the New Balance 880, this shoe has always been a staple for runners looking for a reliable daily trainer, and the 880v15 carries that legacy forward with some thoughtful updates. What stood out to me right away was just how balanced this shoe feels. It’s cushioned without being mushy, supportive without being controlling, and versatile enough to handle a variety of runs. For me, it’s one of those “no-drama” shoes I can count on whether I’m lacing up for an easy morning jog, a steady mid-week run, or even a longer effort on the weekend. The 880v15 doesn’t scream for attention, but that’s exactly what makes it so dependable. Also, very easy to recommend to newer runners.

Upper
The upper on the 880v15 is comfortable and secure in a way that makes it easy to forget about once you’re running. The engineered mesh feels breathable and soft, wrapping the foot without any hot spots. I liked the gusseted tongue as it stayed put and created a nice, locked-in feel around the midfoot. The heel collar has plenty of padding, giving the shoe a plush step-in experience, and I never experienced any heel slippage. The toebox is roomy enough for natural toe splay, but the overall fit stays snug enough that the shoe never felt sloppy. It’s an upper that leans into comfort, this is not a performance shoe by any means so don’t expect that from it.

Midsole
The Fresh Foam X midsole uses a dual-density setup, and it really gives the 880v15 its character. The softer layer on top provides a cushioned landing, while the firmer base layer adds a touch of responsiveness and stability. At 34 mm in the heel and 26 mm in the forefoot, there’s plenty of foam underfoot, but it never felt overwhelming. It’s not the bounciest foam on the market, but it’s reliable and consistent—perfect for the bread-and-butter runs that make up most of my week. If you are pacing in the 9-10min+ range per mile and just want an everyday partner, the 880v15 is a solid option.

Outsole
The outsole is built to last, with durable rubber in the heel and blown rubber in the forefoot for a smoother toe-off. On the road, traction felt solid, even in light rain, and the outsole design helped create smooth transitions. After several runs, I noticed minimal wear, so this shoe will rack up a lot of miles before needing to be retired. It’s not designed for trails, but for roads and light gravel paths, it felt more than capable. they have done work to lighten up the rubber and improve the grooving of the rubber, but again, just very durable.

Performance
On the run, the 880v15 felt versatile and steady. Easy miles felt cushioned and comfortable, long runs felt protected, and even some moderate uptempo work didn’t feel out of place although not its forte. It’s not a shoe I’d grab for intervals or racing, but it’s also not sluggish—it has just enough responsiveness to handle a variety of training needs. What impressed me most was how natural and comfortable it felt underfoot and on the foot. I didn’t have to think about the shoe while running, which is exactly what I want from a daily trainer. My legs always felt good after runs in it, which tells me the balance of cushioning and stability is right where it should be. It was never fast, but it was always reliable.

Conclusion
The New Balance Fresh Foam X 880v15 is a classic daily trainer done right and thuis the 880 remains one of the best workhorse shoes out there. With its comfortable upper, balanced dual-density midsole, and durable outsole, it delivers a smooth and reliable ride that works for just about any type of run. It’s not flashy, and it won’t give you the explosive feel of a plated super trainer, but that’s not the point. The 880v15 is built to handle the everyday miles that form the backbone of training. For me, it’s the kind of shoe I’d recommend to almost anyone who wants a dependable, comfortable, and long-lasting daily trainer.
