Upper
From first glance, the upper feels rugged yet thoughtfully put together. The woven engineered fabric—with recycled and TPU components—strikes a nice balance between durability and structure. I noticed that while the forefoot is fairly lightweight, the heel area is significantly more padded and supportive, making for a locked-in feel that’s still forgiving. The gusseted tongue does a solid job of keeping debris out. It did take a few runs for the upper to soften up and really hug my foot; initially, the toe box felt a touch narrow, and that TPU mudguard had a bit of stiffness, but it relaxed nicely with mileage. A couple of reviewers did mention it felt a bit loose or less secure laterally, so I’d say it leans toward roomy in some dimensions and snug in others, depending on your foot shape.

Midsole
The midsole is thick and dense—that 29 mm heel stack (measured up to ~40 mm overall) really shows when you step in. Though it doesn’t feel bouncy like a classic TPU, the Susterra e-TPU foam gives a smooth, steady cushioning that reminds me of solid trail sleepers—soft enough to be comfortable, firm enough to feel stable. The rocker geometry helps the shoe roll forward efficiently, and paired with the supercritical insole, the ride doesn’t feel flat or punishing. I liked how it didn’t firm up in cold conditions—yet still offers that grounded trail feel and protection from rough terrain.

Outsole
Icebug’s grip game remains strong here. The RB9X rubber compound grips mud, wet rock, and slush with confidence—because of those hefty 5 mm lugs, I never worried about slipping. It’s impressive how well the outsole transitions from mud to gravel to pavement, offering protection and traction without feeling overly aggressive. It’s full rubber coverage, so it adds weight, but it also means I feel confident even in conditions where other trail shoes might falter. Just know that it’s not made for slick rock or minimal trail, but rather for those grippy, unpredictable underfoot surfaces.

Performance
On trail, the Järv RB9X feels like a winter warrior: protective, stable, and secure. It’s not a nimble or quick-feeling shoe, but it doesn’t pretend to be. What it does is smooth out tough terrain and cold underfoot, and remind your legs that they’ve got a solid cushion beneath them. I took it through snowy singletrack, muddy grips, and slushy hills—each time it held up, felt solid, and left me more confident. That denser midsole and grippy outsole pair well in sloppy, cold runs, though I’d skip it when speed or lightness are the priority. I did notice that it can feel warm in hotter weather and that the weight makes it chug along a bit, but it’s a small price to pay for its specialty.

Conclusion
If you’re looking for a trail shoe that’s tough, sustainable, and made to carve through winter to spring terrain with durability and grip, the Icebug Järv RB9X is a compelling pick. It’s overbuilt—but intentionally so—for cold, sloppy, technical trail days. The cushioning soothes rough surfaces, the outsole refuses to let go, and the materials show real environmental thought. It’s not for the light-and-fast crowd or those blazing hot summer miles, but for massive trail protection with a conscience? It sings.
