The Rebel series has always been one of New Balance’s most exciting trainers, blending lightweight fun with a touch of versatility. With the Rebel v5, that personality is alive and well, but with some noticeable refinements that make it even more approachable for daily training. What stood out to me is how the shoe manages to stay lively and playful while offering enough cushioning to take it beyond just short or fast runs. It feels like a shoe that begs you to run a little quicker, but doesn’t punish you if you want to just cruise at an easy pace.

Upper
The upper on the Rebel v5 is simple but effective. The engineered mesh is lightweight and breathable, and it wraps around the foot in a way that feels secure without being restrictive. I liked that it has just enough structure in the midfoot to hold things in place while leaving the forefoot open and natural-feeling. The heel collar is moderately padded, which kept my foot locked in without feeling overly bulky. For me, the overall fit felt true to size, with that balance of snug where it matters and roomy where it counts. It’s a comfortable upper that doesn’t get in the way.

Midsole
The FuelCell midsole is the heart of this shoe, and it’s as fun as ever. At 32 mm in the heel and 26 mm in the forefoot, there’s enough cushion to make longer runs comfortable, but the foam still has that springy, propulsive feel that makes the Rebel line stand out. I noticed the 6 mm drop encourages a natural stride, and the shoe feels smooth rolling from midfoot to toe-off. What I really appreciated is that the foam strikes a nice middle ground—it’s soft enough to take the sting out of pavement but not so mushy that it feels unstable. On days when I wanted to pick up the pace, the foam really came alive.

Outsole
The outsole uses rubber in the heel and forefoot with exposed foam in between to keep weight down. On the road, traction felt reliable, and I never had issues with grip on turns or faster efforts. Because of the exposed foam, durability might not be as high as in a heavier-duty trainer, but that’s part of the trade-off for keeping the shoe so light and fast-feeling. After several runs, the outsole showed only minor wear, and I think it should hold up well for typical training mileage if you rotate it with other shoes.

Performance
On the run, the Rebel v5 felt like a true “fun shoe.” Easy runs were smooth and light, while faster workouts had that springy pop that made me want to keep pressing the pace. It’s not a max-cushion trainer, so for long recovery runs I might reach for something softer, but the Rebel v5 handled mid-distance runs and uptempo efforts beautifully. It felt nimble and quick underfoot, and at just over 7 ounces, it disappeared on my feet in the best way. I’d call it one of those shoes that makes running feel playful, which is sometimes exactly what I want.

Conclusion
The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 continues the line’s tradition of delivering a lightweight, energetic trainer that balances fun with versatility. The breathable upper, springy FuelCell foam, and streamlined outsole all work together to create a shoe that feels just as good for daily mileage as it does for speedier sessions. It’s not built for maximum durability or plush comfort, but that’s not the point—it’s about lightness, energy, and enjoyment. For me, it’s a shoe that makes running feel a little more exciting, and that alone makes it worth a spot in the rotation.
