When it comes to daily trainers, the Brooks Ghost Max 3 has been one of the more exciting updates I’ve laced up recently. The Ghost Max line is known for being the “plush cousin” to the regular Ghost, and this third version leans further into comfort while refining the ride. It’s not built to be the lightest or the fastest shoe out there, but what it does exceptionally well is provide a stable, cushioned platform that feels just as good at mile one as it does at mile ten. If you’re after a shoe that’s versatile, protective, and friendly on the legs, this one’s worth a look.

The Upper
The upper feels like it was designed with comfort first. The engineered mesh breathes decently well while still holding its shape, so my foot never felt sloppy. I noticed the heel collar is especially plush—great if you’re someone who values step-in comfort. The padded tongue adds to that cushy feel, though it does make the shoe run a touch warmer on hot days. Fit-wise, I’d call it true to size, with enough space in the forefoot to let toes splay naturally without the shoe feeling loose. Lockdown is easy to dial in, and once laced, I didn’t experience any heel slip.

Midsole
This is where the Ghost Max 3 really shines. The DNA Loft v3 midsole is nitrogen-infused, so it has that lightweight, slightly bouncy quality, but with plenty of softness underfoot. The stack is high—39 mm in the heel and 33 mm in the forefoot—so you’re sitting on a big slab of foam. The 6 mm drop gives it a nice, balanced feel that doesn’t pitch you too far forward or back. To me, the midsole feels more protective than energetic—it’s cushioned enough for recovery runs or long efforts but doesn’t feel mushy. It’s stable too, thanks to the wide base, which I really appreciated on days when my legs felt a little beat up.

Outsole
Brooks went with generous rubber coverage here, which makes the shoe feel durable and grippy on both dry pavement and light gravel paths. The grooves and flex lines are cut in a way that keeps transitions fairly smooth despite all that cushioning underfoot. After a handful of runs, the outsole showed minimal wear, so I’d expect this shoe to last a good number of miles. It’s not the most flexible outsole out there, but given how thick the midsole is, I think that trade-off makes sense.

Performance on the Run
On the road, the Ghost Max 3 delivers what I’d call a “protected cruise” ride. It’s not snappy like a plated trainer, but it doesn’t need to be—it’s about keeping your legs fresh. Easy runs feel fantastic, and long runs benefit from the forgiving cushioning. I wouldn’t reach for it on speed workouts, but for recovery days or just logging daily mileage, it hits the sweet spot. The wide platform also makes it feel very stable, which gave me extra confidence on uneven sidewalks. I’ve even used it for a few walks and casual outings, and it feels just as good for those slower paces.

Conclusion
The Brooks Ghost Max 3 is a shoe I’d recommend to runners who want maximum comfort without venturing into the ultra-soft, squishy territory. It’s a durable, reliable, and surprisingly versatile trainer that works well for easy days, long miles, or just being on your feet a lot. The plush upper, stable midsole, and high level of cushioning all add up to a smooth, protective ride. If you’re chasing speed, there are better options, but if your priority is comfort and consistency, the Ghost Max 3 more than delivers.
