The Brooks Ghost series has always been about reliability — a neutral daily trainer you can count on for comfort, versatility and durability. With the Ghost 17, Brooks gives the shoe its biggest update in years by moving to DNA Loft v3 foam. The result is a shoe that still feels familiar and approachable, but with a softer, smoother ride that makes it more modern. If you are looking for a dependable daily trainer that doesn’t overcomplicate things, the Ghost 17 is very much in that sweet spot.

Upper
The upper on the Ghost 17 feels clean and straightforward. The engineered mesh does a nice job of balancing breathability with structure, so my foot always felt supported without being overly snug. The heel collar and tongue are generously padded, which adds a plush, step-in feel that made me want to wear the shoe for casual use, too. I found the fit to be true to size with a touch of extra space in the toe box, which I liked for longer runs when my feet swelled a bit. It’s not the most minimal upper out there, but it’s comfortable and secure in a very traditional Brooks way.

Midsole
This is where the big change happens. The Ghost 17 introduces DNA Loft v3 into the line, and it really changes the personality of the shoe. The foam feels lighter and more resilient than the older EVA blends, and there’s a subtle bounce that makes the shoe feel less flat than past versions. At the same time, the ride stays consistent and predictable, which I appreciated on easy runs when I didn’t want to think about my shoes. The 12 mm drop gives a very traditional feel, rolling you forward in a smooth but slightly pronounced heel-to-toe transition. I noticed it worked especially well when I was tired and needed the shoe to carry me through the stride.

Outsole
Durability is always a hallmark of the Ghost line, and the 17 doesn’t break that pattern. The outsole has generous rubber coverage with cutouts that help it flex through transitions. Grip on dry pavement is excellent, and I found it reliable on light gravel as well. After a handful of runs, the outsole barely showed any wear, which makes me think this shoe could easily handle hundreds of miles. It’s not a super flexible outsole, but with all the cushioning underfoot, that seems like a fair trade.

Run Performance
Out on the road, the Ghost 17 feels like a daily workhorse. It’s not flashy, but that’s part of its charm—it just disappears underfoot and lets you get the miles in. I really enjoyed it on easy runs and steady mid-distance efforts where comfort was the priority. The cushioning is protective without being overly soft, so I felt supported but not bogged down. That said, it’s not a shoe I’d reach for when I want to pick up the pace—there are lighter and snappier trainers for that. Still, for long days on your feet or recovery runs, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for.

Conclusion
The Brooks Ghost 17 is a textbook daily trainer, updated with modern foam that breathes new life into a classic. The DNA Loft v3 midsole makes it lighter, smoother, and just a touch more fun than older Ghosts, while the comfortable upper and durable outsole keep it grounded in the familiar strengths of the line. It’s not a high-performance speed shoe, but it’s not trying to be—it’s built for reliability, comfort, and consistency. If you’re after a neutral trainer that you can trust day after day, the Ghost 17 is a shoe I’d happily recommend.
